Dentures and denture adhesive

If you’ve just started wearing dentures, or if yours are starting to feel a little loose, denture adhesive can be a great temporary fix. But finding the right product can be the difference between a confident smile and constant worry. With so many options available, how do you know which is best? Continue reading to explore different types of adhesives, so you can find your perfect fit.

Denture Adhesive Creams

Adhesive creams are one of the most popular choices for many denture wearers. They strike a balance between a strong, long-lasting hold and comfort. Easy to apply and adjust, creams help prevent irritation by creating a cushion between your dentures and gums. They can also come in unique flavors to make the application process more enjoyable.

On the other hand, they can also be messy, often squeezing out of your prosthetic as you put it on. Creams also carry a risk of overuse unless you buy specific formulas that don’t include zinc as an ingredient. So, be careful when selecting your product and check the ingredient list!

Denture Adhesive Powders

If you dislike the feel or taste of creams, denture powders could be a good alternative. Powders are easy to use—just sprinkle, press, and go! They offer a secure grip, making them ideal for those looking for a cleaner, simpler solution.

While powders offer a good hold, less taste alteration, and easier cleanup, they also don’t provide as much cushion and typically don’t last as long. So, they may be best for quick trips to the store or going out with a friend for coffee. If you’re going to spend the day out and about, another option might be better.

Denture Adhesive Strips & Pads

Adhesive strips and pads are the ultimate inconvenience. These pre-measured products provide a precise application every time, and they’re particularly helpful if you struggle with applying creams or powders evenly. They can last for hours and can reliably hold your prosthetic in place. Pads also provide a bit of cushion, similar to creams.

However, because strips and pads are pre-measured, they’re not one-size-fits-all. If they don’t fit out of the box, you may have to modify them before they become usable, taking away from the convenience factor.

So, which adhesive is right for you? It depends! Your lifestyle, the event, and your preferences for texture and comfort all come into play when choosing the best product for your needs. It might take experimenting with each type to find the best match, but don’t give up! You can always call your dentist for advice if you simply can’t decide.
